NDYC Calls on Nigerians to Support INEC’s Independence

The Niger Delta Youth Congress (NDYC) has raised alarm over alleged attempts to interfere with the Independent National Electoral Commission’s (INEC) recall process for Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, describing the actions as a threat to Nigeria’s democratic institutions.

In a comprehensive statement, the organization accused unnamed political actors of orchestrating a campaign to discredit INEC through misinformation and potential protests. The youth group emphasized that the recall process is a constitutional right protected under Section 69 of the 1999 Constitution, which allows constituents to challenge their elected representatives through legal channels.

The NDYC specifically called on security agencies, including the police and Department of State Services, to prevent potential unrest and investigate attempts to manipulate public perception. The organization argued that any interference with INEC’s investigative process constitutes a direct challenge to democratic principles.

The statement characterized the ongoing situation as a calculated effort to create political instability, urging all stakeholders to respect the legal framework governing electoral processes. The youth congress stressed the importance of allowing INEC to conduct its constitutional duties without external pressure or intimidation.

No immediate response was available from INEC or Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan at the time of reporting.
